Spanish language – Verbs SER and ESTAR.

In some languages these two verbs are united in one, in English it is the verb BE and in French it is ÊTRE. This fact sometimes makes it difficult to understand how to use both SER and ESTAR in Spanish. We show you below some clues to help you with this subject:

First of all it’s important to know how to conjugate them at least in present tense:

Yo soy
Tú eres, usted es
Él es, ella es
Nosotros somos
Ustedes son
Ellos, ellas son

We can use SER to express the following:

To be somebody- Él es el nuevo director.
To be from a place- Laura es de Perú.
To express what you mean something for someone else- Ana es mi gran amor.
To express what someone is like- Antonio es tímido e inteligente.

Yo estoy
Tú estás, usted está
Él está, ella está
Nosotros estamos
Ustedes están
Ellos, ellas están

We can use ESTAR to express the following:

To be in a place- El niño está en la escuela.
To be with someone- Laura está con su madre.
To be in love- Ana está enamorada de Juan.
To say how you feel.- María está contenta.
To say something is in certain condition – El televisor está roto.
To say you are in some level or category- Laura está en sexto grado.
